Bill Taylor To Keynote 2015 Accelerate Michigan

Fast Company co-founder and agenda-setting writer, speaker and entrepreneur will share his broad expertise of the best ways to compete, innovate and succeed

DETROIT – Oct. 13, 2014 – The Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition (AMIC), one of North America’s largest business competitions, today announced that Bill Taylor, co-founder of Fast Company and bestselling author, will deliver the keynote address at this year’s gala event.

Taylor made his name as co-founder and founding editor of Fast Company, one of the most influential new tech publications of the last two decades. Fast Company has won countless awards, from Startup of the Year in its early days to 2014’s Magazine of the Year, the highest honor in its field. It has been ground-breaking as a business as well. A company that began in borrowed office space in Harvard Square eventually sold for $360 million—the second-highest price for a single magazine is U.S. history.

Taylor’s most recent book, Practically Radical: Not-So-Crazy Ways to Transform Your Company, Shake Up Your Industry, and Challenge Yourself, is based on in-depth access to 25 organizations that are making deep-seated changes under the trying circumstances. These organizations (from technology companies and nonprofits to hospitals, automakers and banks) are mastering a set of strategies and practices that define the work of leadership in turbulent times.

“As the cofounder of a magazine called Fast Company, an event called ‘Accelerate Michigan’ feels like a natural fit,” Taylor said. “I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned about launching companies that make a difference, building brands that stand out from the crowd, and how entrepreneurs, investors, and leaders everywhere can create long-lasting value in fast-moving times. I also excited to learn from the great work going on among technologists, company-builders, and the Michigan innovation economy.”

Investors, entrepreneurs, funders and experts in the business and innovation sector will attend this year’s competition along with 56 semifinalist companies who will compete for more than $1 million in cash and in-kind prizes. In addition to the business competition, Accelerate Michigan aims to showcase every facet of Detroit’s rich, artistic culture, including exhibitions from Leadhead Glass, Adora Bella CeramicsWoodward Throwbacks and Detroit Scroll.

“We’re honored to announce Bill Taylor as this year’s keynote speaker given his unique perspective and proven success as an entrepreneur,” said Lauren Bigelow, Executive Director of Accelerate Michigan. “His deep knowledge of technology and the media, in conjunction with his experience launching a wildly successful startup, make him the perfect voice to conclude the competition. We are excited to hear Bill’s lessons about challenging conventional wisdom and showcasing the power of business at its best.”

Accelerate Michigan is designed to bring together later stage entrepreneurs with local, national and international investors. Since 2010, AMIC semi-finalists and winners have raised more than $506 million in funding and created more than 1000 jobs in Michigan.
